Top Things to Know About Mold
9/22/2022 (Permalink)
We’ve all have seen mold before. Whether it’s in a bathroom, on an exterior wall, in the fridge on some food, or other damp areas; we’ve all experienced mold before. While many people are quite familiar with mold and battling it in their Lockport, Lemont, or Homer Glen home, most may not know everything about this nuisance. In this blog, we go over some of the top things most people may not know about mold in their businesses and homes.
Mold Is Practically Everywhere
Mold at it’s smallest form travels as microscopic spores through the air we breathe. It is in the air outside our home and inside our home. There is no simple way to remove all traces of mold from your home. It is naturally occurring and exists everywhere. While there is very little you can do to keep mold spores from entering your home, you can take steps to keep those spores from colonizing and growing into a bigger and more visible mold growth problem. Keep the air circulating throughout your home and eliminate any moisture problems.
Mold Can Grow In Many Places
The key to mold growth is moisture and organic material. In the home, organic material can include carpeting, wood framing materials, drywall, cardboard boxes, clothes, wallpaper, and furniture. In the forest, mold grows or feeds off of dead organic matter like dead trees and fallen leaves. Mold can also grow from the dust on a concrete floor or in your air ducts. If there is organic material and moisture present, mold will find a way to grow.
Moisture is Mold’s Best Friend
While you can’t eliminate organic material from your home, you can take away the fuel that causes mold growth -- moisture and standing water. The reason why you will often find mold in basements, bathrooms, and crawl spaces is because that is where you also tend to find moisture in the air. Since mold spores and organic material are present in most environments, including homes and businesses, it is just a matter of introducing moisture to cause mold to grow.
In basements, you can reduce the moisture with a dehumidifier, In a crawl space, you can line the bare ground with a moisture barrier lock i.e. plastic sheeting. With bathrooms, you can make sure to keep the exhaust fan on when showering and leave the bathroom door open afterward to allow the moisture to dissipate.
If you should have a basement flood or a roof leak or a broken water pipe, it’s important to get the water and the moisture out quickly to inhibit mold growth. Since water can get into areas that may not be so easy to dry, most homeowners and businesses contact a water damage restoration and mold remediation company, like SERVPRO of Lockport, Lemont, and Homer Glen. They have the equipment and the expertise to remove all of the water and all of the moisture and treat the areas to prevent mold from taking hold. If mold growth has occurred, they can also remediate the mold and eliminate the moisture problem.
Mold Has a Distinct Smell
Mold can’t always be spotted with the naked eye. Sometimes it is hidden underneath or deep within carpets. Sometimes it starts inside walls or in air ducts or in other hidden and unseen areas of your home. If you don’t see the mold occurring, the other tell-tale sign of the presence of mold in your home is the smell of mold. Mold has a distinct musty smell that many may acquaint with a basement or crawl space or wet forest. The smell is the result of the mold eating and metabolizing the organic material it is feeding off of. The material can include most organic matter like wood, carpeting, clothes, cardboard boxes, drywall, and furniture. In the forest, mold feeds off dead organic matter like fallen trees and dead leaves.

How To Address Mold In Your Home
6/29/2022 (Permalink)
A mold infestation can grow in any room of a house, including bathrooms, kitchens, and living rooms. It usually appears as a series of splotches or streaks across walls and ceilings but can sometimes be hidden behind walls or underneath cabinets. In many cases, there will also be a musty odor that is the first telltale sign to a homeowner there may be a problem. Once you realize you have mold, it’s important to find the cause of mold in your home and address it.
How mold can damage your home
Mold damage is not just a visual or cosmetic problem. It also causes permanent damage to materials such as drywall, furniture, and whatever else it comes in contact with. It can lead to permanent staining or even deterioration of materials. Knowing how to combat the damage and prevent further problems requires a company trained in remediation and restoration of mold in the structure and personal property. SERVPRO mold remediation technicians have extensive experience and training to help homeowners suffering from mold damage.
How SERVPRO finds and addresses mold
When addressing mold damage, the first task is to control the mold at its source. We set up containment around the affected area using heavy plastic sheeting to cover entrances and exit, sealing the vents to prevent mold from spreading through the ductwork. Technicians may also set up special machines to reduce the number of airborne spores while they remove mold from the affected area.
Next, we remove the contamination in the home. Any structural or personal property item that cannot be cleaned is disposed of. Homeowners are alerted when this is necessary. Before moving any compromised item out of the contained area, our technicians clean it using vacuums with HEPA filters, dry wiping with sponges or cloths, and using anti-fungal and anti-microbial cleaning agents, all to prevent further spread
Keeping Mold Out Of Your Office
6/8/2022 (Permalink)
Whether you live and work in a humid climate, or just in a space that tends to be humid, such as those in older buildings, you or your staff may be experiencing problems from mold and/or mildew or dust mites. Limited ventilation in places such as basement office spaces, or small kitchens/break areas and bathrooms, can cause moisture to build up, even in the driest of climates. It will only take 24-48 hours for a mold colony to begin growing once the airborne spores discover an environment they find attractive.
Using a dehumidifier is one of the best ways you can protect your business from a mold growth invasion. Using a dehumidifier will:
- Reduce humidity levels, making your building less inviting to allergens, particularly mold spores.
- Reduce the possibility that mold will develop on furniture, clothing, and other materials.
- Help to reduce the unpleasant odors that accompany mold and mildew.
- Allow you to breathe easier by reducing irritation to your skin and respiratory system.
- Reduce dust, so you won’t be cleaning and dusting as much.
- Provides a less humid environment for your office and staff, keeping electronics and tools free from rust and corrosion.
- Lower energy costs, helping your HVAC to run more efficiently. When the air in the home is humid, the A/C must work doubly hard by cooling the air AND removing the moisture. Your unit will wear out sooner under that stress.
- Run quietly and efficiently in the background of daily life. You won’t even notice them.
Another way to protect your commercial investment is to have routine cleaning done in all areas where water is prevalent, and keeping these areas dry daily will be helpful here, as well.
The team of SERVPRO of Aurora is always available to help with your clean up issues in your home or office. Fire damage, water damage, and mold prevention are just some of our areas of expertise.
Mold Cleaning Process
5/18/2022 (Permalink)
When there’s a water intrusion, like a roof leak or leaking waterline, mold can quickly become a problem in your home or business. It is the water you can't see that may cause the most damage. Mold can affect your health and can also cause significant damage to your property. Fortunately, we are here to help and have the training, protective gear, and specialized equipment necessary to handle your mold problem. Although every mold damage scenario is different, requiring a unique solution, the general mold remediation process stays the same. The following steps illustrate a “typical” mold removal process.
Call Professionals - SERVPRO of Lockport, Lemont, Homer Glen
The mold cleanup and restoration process begins when you call our office. A representative will ask a series of questions to help determine the necessary equipment, resources, and personnel needed.
Inspection & Damage Assessment
Your property will be carefully inspected for signs of mold using technology designed to detect mold and hidden water sources. Mold feeds on cellulose and water which can be hidden from plain view.
Mold Containment
Various containment procedures will be placed to prevent the spread of mold and isolate the contaminated area with physical barriers and negative air pressure to keep the mold spores from spreading during the cleanup process.
Air Filtration
Specialized filtration equipment will be set in place that captures microscopic mold spores out of the air. SERVPRO technicians utilize powerful air scrubbers and HEPA vacuums to prevent the spread of these mold spores while the mold remediation is in progress.
Removing Mold & Mold-Infested Materials
The mold remediation process depends on the amount of mold growth and the types of surfaces on which the mold appears. Antifungal and antimicrobial treatments will be used to eliminate mold colonies and help prevent new colonies from forming. Removing and disposing of mold-infested porous materials, like drywall and flooring, may be necessary to remediate heavy mold growth.
Cleaning Contents & Belongings
We clean your furniture, decorative items, curtains, and other restorable items affected by mold. Our technicians use a variety of cleaning techniques to clean and sanitize your belongings. They are also trained to remove odors and deodorize using fogging equipment.
Restoration
Depending on the level of mold damage, drywall, subfloors, and other building materials may be removed. Restoration may involve minor repairs, such as replacing drywall, painting, and installing new carpet, or it may entail major repairs such as the reconstruction of various areas or rooms in a home or business. We understand mold and mold growth and have the equipment to remediate mold in your home or business.
Mold and Your Duct Work

HVAC and Mold
Why is HVAC mold so common? Well every time it encounters an area with high humidity levels and warm temperatures it wants to party. These conditions occur during both heating and cooling the system. Improperly sized units can cause a system to work harder producing an excessive amount of condensation resulting in standing water in the lines. This creates an environment for mold to develop which will blow spores throughout your home every time your HVAC is turned on.
How to Prevent?
- Changing your air filters monthly.
- Inspect for any cracks or leaks regularly.
- Routine cleaning of pans making sure to drain any excess water.
- Routine duct cleaning.

Top 3 Spots To Check For Water Damage In Your Home
2/9/2022 (Permalink)
Catching water damage before it becomes evident can save you time and money, so knowing the top spots in your home to regularly monitor for damage is crucial for any homeowner. Instead of waiting until a water stain appears on your ceiling or water pools on the floor under your sink, make it a priority to inspect these three spots for water damage on a monthly basis.
1. Check under the sink.
Sinks are regularly located in your kitchen, your bathrooms, and maybe even in other rooms in your house. Since water flows from the faucets and comes up through pipes underneath the sink, it’s not uncommon for leaky sinks to occur. Always inspect the cabinetry and piping underneath your sink for any leaks or moisture.
2. Don’t forget to look behind the toilet.
Your toilet is another frequently-used appliance in your home that uses a lot of water with every flush. Monitoring the space behind and around your toilet for any water damage is always a good practice.
3. Take a look at your roof.
It’s easy to forget to look at your roof for water damage, but if your gutters aren’t working properly or your roof isn’t in good shape, there’s a fair chance that water may be seeping through your roof into your attic, your garage, and your ceilings. It can be hard to know what to look for, but any obvious water stains are a bad sign. Be sure to check out the roof from the exterior and the interior sides (your ceilings).
Mold Inside Your Home
1/25/2022 (Permalink)
Mold needs moisture, water, or humidity to grow and thrive. Mold spores can begin growing indoors when they land on wet surfaces. Some common places mold can thrive include:
- Showers, bathtubs, sinks, and toilets are common places for mold growth. These areas tend to be damp, and without proper ventilation, they provide the perfect environment.
- Air conditioning and heating vents.
- Fireplace and chimney. When not being used, fireplaces and chimneys are cool, damp, and dark - a fertile ground for mold spores.
- In the attic. If your roof has any possible leaks, mold can grow and spread through the ventilation system in the attic. It can also thrive in the insulation and soffit vents.
- In the basement. That all-too-familiar musty-basement smell is evidence of humidity and moisture, and more than likely mold. Most commonly it can be found around pipes and ducts, or near the foundation, sump pump, windows, or vents.
Indoor mold growth can and should be prevented or controlled by eliminating moist conditions indoors. If there is mold growth in your home, it’s important to not only deal with it immediately and remove it; but resolve the root of the problem as well. In the right situation, mold will grow very quickly, in as little as 24- 48 hours.
Mold in Insulation
12/18/2021 (Permalink)
When a terrible disaster hits your home, our SERVPRO team responded and headed down south. After our team responded to calls of storm and water damage, they addressed evidence of mold in multiple locations. Initially, one thinks that a hurricane is going to cause destruction due to heavy winds, rains and flooding. However, the average customer doesn't even think about the mold until the rain water and flooding has done it's damage. Our SERVPRO team responded to several jobs with mold issues after the long hours they put into storm repair.
By this time, our team had been out of state for almost three weeks helping with the aftermath of Harvey. They were going to stay longer if it meant addressing more issues such as mold.
This picture shows water damage in a customer's ceiling, which has insulation. Since insulation has to be removed for the drying process, the SERVPRO team could take the steps needed to address the mold issue. No job is too big or too small for SERVPRO.
House Mold: Types and Solutions
11/16/2021 (Permalink)
House Mold
Mold growth is typical in a variety of climates and homes. There is no shame in having experienced these types of problems. However, while not uncommon, mold comes in all shapes, sizes and species, and it can be beneficial to understand the kinds of household molds and how to prevent or treat them, ensuring a safe and clean living environment for you and your family.
1. Food Mold
Food mold is likely the most common type of mold, and most people experience it as bread mold. You may look in your bread drawer one day, and everything is fine, but the very next day you see areas of green and black blotches on some of the pieces. This type of growth is natural and likely unrelated to any particular underlying problems in your home.
2. Surface Mold
Another common type of house mold is surface mold. As the name implies, the mold growth is restricted to the surface of an object. This type of mold may be remedied quite easily by using certain over-the-counter cleaners. However, it is essential to make sure that the mold issue is indeed surface and does not penetrate the drywall or framing.
3. Mold Infestations
A mold infestation typically occurs in areas with significant water damage or spaces with high humidity levels. Unfortunately, a problem like this usually requires deep penetration of the structure to ensure that the area is clear of the infestation before restoration.
4. Mold Remediation
Whether you only suspect a problem or have the water damage to prove one, it is beneficial to call a mold remediation specialist in the Milwuakee, WI, area. Mold can be invasive and dangerous. Specialists are certified and capable of remedying your problem quickly and efficiently without risking the safety of you or your family.
Mold growth is common in homes, and while food mold and surface mold are relatively simple and easy fixes, mold infestations can be dangerous and present a more substantial risk to the integrity of your home. When dealing with large mold problems, it is likely best to hire a professional.
The Best Way to Fight Mold is Prevention
9/18/2021 (Permalink)
No one likes to see mold in their home or business. It’s unattractive and can cause a musty smell. The intrusion of water into your home or building can result in mold growth. Water seepage can occur due to storm damage, plumbing or equipment failures, long-standing leaks, or poor humidity control. When water issues aren’t addressed right away, the resulting damage can result in mold growth. That’s why the best way to fight mold is prevention. Here’s what you need to know about preventing mold in your home or business.
How does mold grow?
If the humidity and moisture levels in a water-damaged environment are not quickly returned to normal, mold spores may grow and multiply. Why? Because microscopic mold spores exist naturally almost everywhere, indoors, and outdoors, so removing all mold from a home or business is impossible, but you can control growth. Organic materials found inside a building, such as wood, paper, drywall, and insulation, provide food sources for mold to flourish in the right, moist circumstances. Excessive mold growth can lead to unpleasant conditions that need to be addressed.
Mold growth isn’t always obvious
Some people are surprised when mold appears “out of nowhere” but chances are there are signs that were simply overlooked such as:
- The presence of visible mold in corners or cracks.
- Musty odors may indicate the presence of mold.
- Any evidence of past moisture problems that might have caused undetected mold growth.
- Excessive humidity.
To keep mold from growing in your home or business, repair any leaking pipes or faucets, keep ventilation drip pans clean and dry, keep indoor humidity below 50%, and regularly check the plumbing, roof gutters, and other water sources to ensure there are no leaks that can lead to mold growth.
What to do if you experience mold in your home or business
Despite diligent prevention efforts, sometimes mold growth happens. If you are sure or suspect that there is mold in your home or building, call SERVPRO as quickly as possible to prevent the mold growth from continued spread, resulting in a greater chance of unrecoverable property. SERVPRO professionals have the expertise to prevent or mitigate the devastating effects of mold damage. Contact us 24/7 and our trained professionals will come out and help you with mold remediation.
Mold Remediation: Mold versus Mildew
6/7/2021 (Permalink)
When a home suffers a water damage event, a mold infestation can quickly arise and spread throughout a home in 48-72 hours. Because mold can produce allergens and irritants, you will want a professional that has training and experience to properly resolve the mold infestation. That's where we come in!
How can you tell the difference between mold and mildew?
Primarily mildew is a plant disease but it can thrive on any organic matter, not just living tissue. It can appear on clothing, leather, paper, walls, ceilings, floor and even on your shower wall. It usually grows in a flat pattern in a white, gray or yellowish color. It will turn brown or black over time.
Mold is usually fuzzy and appears in irregular shaped spots. It also can appear in many different colors – blue, green, yellow, brown, gray, black, or white. Mold grows on organic matter everywhere but is only visible once the colonies grow.
How can you test the affected area to see if it is mildew or mold?
If you are unsure of what the substance is within the affected area, you can easily have it tested. The best course of action is to ask for professional assistance (like us!), but you can also fairly easily identify whether it is mildew or mold with a little bit of household bleach.
1. Apply a few drops of bleach to the affected area.
2. Wait 5 minutes and inspect the spot.
3. If the affected area becomes lighter, you are more than likely dealing with mildew. If the spot remains dark, it is most likely mold.
How to Make Sure Your Home or Business is Free of Mold
5/13/2021 (Permalink)
Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:
- Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
- Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
- Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
- Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
- Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
- Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.
If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation

Where Can Mold Hide in a Commercial Building?
5/1/2020 (Permalink)
Stay on top of potential mold growth by inspecting those hidden areas frequently.
Since mold thrives in a dark, moist environment, you may not spot it by walking through your building in Aurora, IL. That's why it's important to conduct a periodic inspection of those hidden places where mold growth is common.
Where Does Mold Grow in Commercial Buildings?
Ductwork - Your building's ductwork contains a lot of moisture from the cooling air that is blown into the office. Check the lining of the ducts for mold growth and damage. If the duct lining contains cracks, water can seep through. This creates the right conditions for mold. Dirty linings are also an invitation for mold. Any abnormalities in the duct lining should be inspected and replaced by a professional.
HVAC drain pans - Make sure the pans are draining properly so that water doesn't pool around the unit.
Carpet - Dirt gets trapped in carpet fibers, and when that is combined with liquid from spills, the resulting water damage is an invitation for mold. If the building has a high humidity level, this increases the risk. Thoroughly dry any wet carpet quickly by sopping up the water and running a fan until the carpet is dried completely. Turning on the air conditioning and dehumidifier will quicken the drying process. If the spill area is larger than 10 square feet, it's time to call a professional.
Ceiling tiles - All ceiling tiles should be inspected for water stains, which could indicate a roof leak. The tiles around the HVAC vents are most vulnerable to moisture and dirt, so check them more frequently.
In addition to setting up a routine maintenance program to look for mold, it's important to schedule an annual inspection with mold remediation specialists. They are trained to know what to look for, and they will give you the best assessment for safely handling any mold they find.
Stay on top of potential mold growth by inspecting those hidden areas frequently.
Mold vs. Mildew?
10/19/2018 (Permalink)
Mold and mildew both have a few matching characteristics. Both thrive on moist, warm areas and can grow on a multitude of surfaces, from food, to your shower to a sheet of paper, and of course they are both two types of fungi that no homeowner likes to see in their home.
However; mold and mildew also have striking differences when it comes to size, color a and texture
Mildew is a surface fungi that can easily be identified as a patch of gray or white fungus that is on the surface of a moist area. Mildew can be easily treated with a store bought cleaner and scrub brush.
Mold, on the other hand, can be black or green and is often the result of a much larger infestation. This type of fungus can appear as almost fuzzy and even slimy in nature. Toxic molds can be harmful to both humans and ecosystems.
The key to treating mold and mildew is to remove it as soon as possible before it has a chance to do permanent damage to your home.

What Is Mold?
5/14/2018 (Permalink)
Molds are a form of fungus. Different types of molds can be found both indoors and outdoors. Molds spread through the production of spores which exist in all indoor environments everywhere. Spores are capable of surviving in harsh conditions that would otherwise prevent the normal mold growth. Molds grow best in moist, warm and humid environments. When mold spores land on a damp spot they begin to grow, digesting the material they grow on.
Common indoor molds include:
- Alternaria - found in damp places indoors, such as showers or under leaky sinks
- Aspergillus - often found indoors growing on dust, powdery food items and building materials like drywall
- Cladosporium - capable of growing in cool places as well as warm ones
- Penicillium - typically found on materials that have been damaged by water and often has a blue or green appearance.
Molds take a variety of forms and textures, appearing as white, black, yellow, blue or green and often looking like a discoloration or stain to a surface They can also have a velvety, fuzzy or rough appearance depending on the type of mold and where it is growing. No mold is good mold, so if you suspect you may have a mold problem call SERVPRO of Aurora, Illinois at 630-862-3930.
Mold and Your Home

Mold is found both indoors and outdoors. Mold can enter your home through open doorways, windows, vents, and heating and air conditioning systems. Mold in the air outside can also attach itself to your clothing, shoes, and pets and be carried indoors.
Mold will grow in places with a lot of moisture, such as around leaks in roofs, windows, and pipes, or where there has been flooding. Mold grows well on paper products, ceiling tiles, and wood products, as well as in dust, paints, wallpaper, insulation, drywall, carpet, fabric, and upholstery.
You can help to control mold in your home by:
- Controlling humidity levels;
- Promptly fixing leaky roofs, windows, and pipes;
- Thoroughly cleaning and drying after flooding
